Osaka University

Osaka University was the sixth imperial university in Japan, founded in 1931 with the strong support of Osaka’s citizens, businesses, and governmental leaders. It has been recognized as one of the leading research universities globally and is at the forefront of technological and social innovation.

Numerous prominent scientists have worked at Osaka University, such as the Nobel Laureate in Physics Hideki Yukawa. The QS World University Rankings were the 4th best ranked higher education institution in Japan (71st worldwide) in 2019.

In October of 2007, Osaka University and Osaka University of Foreign Studies merged, continuing our development as one of the nation’s most prominent comprehensive research universities.

We now have 11 undergraduate schools, 16 graduate schools, 6 research institutes, 2 hospitals, 4 libraries and 17 collaborative education research facilities on campus, including national joint-use facilities. In addition, we have World-leading research centers such as Immunology Frontier Research Center (iFReC) and the Center for Information and Neural Networks (CiNet).

3 Main campuses are located in the northern part of Osaka Prefecture, in Suita, Toyonaka, and Minoh, three cities that border one another.

Degree Programs in English

Osaka University has 20 Degree Programs in English. We have 1 Undergraduate Program, 9 Master’s Programs, and 10 Doctoral Programs.

We only have the “Human Science International Undergraduate Degree Program” for undergraduate program in English so far, “International Undergraduate Program in Science” is established in the field of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry from 2021.
Japanese Language Program will be simultaneously offered for the first year and a half. This program is to be mainly conducted in English at its outset. In later years, it is to be conducted mainly in Japanese to obtain an academic degree.

As for the Graduate Programs, we offer a wide range of science, Engineering, Engineering Science, and Information Science and Technology.

Exchange Student Programs

Student exchange programs at Osaka University accept students from universities that have contracts with OU and send OU students to those universities according to student exchange agreements that OU entered into with overseas universities to increase student mobility. Under the student exchange agreements, most agreements allow students to take classes without paying additional fees. Exchange students from institutions under agreements can take classes at Osaka University without paying any additional tuition fees.
The students’ enrollment period should be more than three months up to one year, and their status at OU is “Special Auditor” or “Special Researcher.” The former is credit-based, and the latter is non-credit-based, and only Graduate Students can choose.

Short-Term Exchange Student Programs

FrontierLab Mini Program
OU accepts students from overseas universities for one week up to 3 months as short term program. Their status at OU is credit-based “Special Auditor” or non-credit-based “Special Researcher.” Short-term students usually pay tuition fees, but if the student is from those universities according to student exchange agreements with OU, the student can take classes without paying tuition fees.

Independent Scholarship

OU Scholarship
It is financial aid for exchange students specific to Osaka University. The recipients should be students from universities that have contracts with OU, and the students’ enrollment period shall not exceed one year.

Support Systems for Exchange Students

Our Support Office offers assistance and provides information for international students, scholars, and their families on such matters as visa procedures, the search for accommodations, and other necessary procedures, focusing its service on prior to and soon after arrival in Japan.

The primary goal of the support office is to create good links with the international students, scholars, and faculty staff at Osaka University. It also aims to help make their lives easier and more comfortable concentrating fully on their academic activities throughout their stay in Japan.
