Sophia University

Sophia University was founded by the Jesuits in 1913. Since then, it has been a pioneer in international education in Japan, attracting students from all over the world. In 1949, Sophia established the first program in Japan taught entirely in English, and it continues to lead the Japanese academic world in offering degree programs bursting with diversity. We welcome students with various backgrounds, following the school spirit of nurturing leaders who hope to improve society “For Others, With Others”. All our 9 Faculties and 29 Departments are gathered in one campus, which is well located in the center of Tokyo. Among 12,300 undergraduate students, around 1,800 of them hold foreign nationality, and 1/6 of our faculty members are also international individuals. We also have partnerships with more than 410 universities in over 80 countries, which enables students to go on a variety of exchange programs.
When it comes to supporting students, Sophia offers a variety of scholarships, including support of partial/full tuition. We also provide different types of dormitories and housing options, aiming to support students who are starting their new life in Japan. Other services, such as counseling center, prayer room, nursery, are easily accessible on campus. And if you’re interested in extracurricular activities, a long list of clubs and circles is available for you to find the best option!
The university’s Career Center is open to all students throughout the year, with counseling available in both Japanese and English. Our employability rate is extremely high at 96%, and our students go on to work for a wide range of companies and organizations.
If you are looking for English-taught, high-quality education, and want to enjoy a global, unique, and welcoming learning environment in Japan, Sophia is the place for you!
